Kate’s Memory Café is offered in partnership with Capital Area Alzheimer’s Association
What it is? A monthly social event targeted to families and caregivers of individuals in stage one and two of the Alzheimer’s disease or dementia (Caregivers and Care Partners come together). The event will generally be held at the Adult Day Center of Helping Hands Respite Care. The Cafe will be set up with small tables with table clothes and decorations. Also available in the Cafe, a lending library of relevant books – supplied by the Alzheimer’s Association, and printed materials with resources from Alzheimer Association, Helping Hands Respite and other sponsors/partners. The Memory Café will include a short welcoming talk by the host, musical entertainment, a presentation on tips and tricks for navigating this new life, and a light meal.
What is the Purpose? To provide an easy and accessible social event which will be interesting and stimulating to the person with Alzheimer’s and provide education and respite to the family caregiver and other family members. To help caregivers understand the importance of respite and to educate them on how they can get it either through natural support systems or professional services.
Dates and Times, Second Sunday afternoon of each month from 2 to 4 pm
Promotion through Alzheimer’s Association, local churches in East Lansing, Haslett, and Okemos, listing in community paper, brochures for fairs and partner organizations to distribute.
Volunteers are welcome we need help an hour before start to set up the room, during to serve and engage or assist participants, and an hour after for clean-up. This is a great opportunity for a family, church group or neighbors. (Three to four volunteers suggested).
Food Service, is provided through the food services of St. Frances Retreat Center.
Entertainment, is coordinate and presented by professional musicians on a volunteer basis or minor stipend.
Program Content, focuses on entertaining and informing in the social setting. Offers of information on available support groups can be made. Elements of programming from the Adult Day Services program will also be used.
