The Boom Award is Caine’s creation to annually recognize accomplished persons with a disability. Annually the award is made in three categories: employee, entrepreneur, and athlete. With over a dozen years of service to LAP Respite and the ALFA program (now Helping Hands Respite Care), Doug Ervin has overcome his own struggles with cerebral palsy. Navigating around the center with the help of a walker, Ervin provides a level of comfort for newer participants to the program who may be learning to accommodate changes in their ability to move about, communicate and socialize. He has a great sense of humor, enjoys time with his family, and is active in the Knights of Columbus.
Executive Director John Stauffer smiles whenever Doug’s name is mentioned “He is such an inspiration to both our participant’s and care providers. Most people when they first meet him believe he is a participant, the look on individual’s faces when they realize he is here as a volunteer to support and care for our participant’s is priceless.”
Overcoming his own disability, Caine was recently named by the Governor to the Michigan Developmental Disabilities Council to advocate for legislation benefiting individuals with disabilities, while also working to give individuals with disabilities an equal opportunity for work and fair compensation, while also promoting entrepreneurship.
At Helping Hands we are proud of our own Doug Ervin, and pleased to call Justin Caine a trusted vendor.
