General Job Description

Helping Hands Respite Care has openings for Care Providers who will care for children and/or adults who have disabilities, chronic illness, emotional/behavioral concerns, challenging behaviors or age related conditions. Examples are persons with Autism, cognitive delays, Cerebral Palsy, stroke and brain injury. Hours are available 7 days per week, 24 hours per day. Typical hours are between 3pm-10pm. Care Providers with more flexible schedules may be scheduled 35-40 hours weekly.

Duties & Responsibilities include: following personalized care plans for persons of all ages, activity planning, social needs, therapies, personal hygiene: including diapering, bathing, dressing, feeding (some feeding tubes), daily documentation/record keeping, lifting/transferring, giving medications, breathing treatments and involvement in the community.

Location: Respite care takes place at our Weekend Respite House (Lansing), in families’ homes (Clinton, Eaton and Ingham counties) and at the Adult Day Services Program (East Lansing).

Minimum Requirements

Dependable transportation and a good driving record, 4 references, health screen, current TB test, proof of high school graduation/GED, internet access, email address and phone.  Copy of driver’s license and auto insurance is needed. You must provide proof of ability to work to the United States. CPR, First Aid and health screen must be obtained before hire.  Employment will not start until all requirements are met.


Care Providers must be able to work a minimum of 15 hours weekly and have dependable transportation to drive within the tri-county area.

Additional Requirements:

1.) Comprehensive training which consists of online training and testing to be completed within a two week window (most are able to complete in five to seven 45 minute sessions). There is a paid onsite half-day training and orientation available to be scheduled on Friday mornings from 8:30am to 1:30pm after your online training is complete.

The In-office training is paid after you complete 80 working hours.  

All scheduling is completed on the internet. You need to have access to the internet to check schedules, notices and messages daily.  Most communication is done via email. Background and driving records are checked.

The ideal applicant will have good people skills, be patient, caring, a team-player, hard worker, self starter and be able to work without constant supervision. Sign language skills are a plus. Care providers must available to work at least 15-20 hours per week including a minimum of 1 weekend per month.
